College Commitment to Freedom of Speech
Message From the President
Purchase College is committed to ensuring the safety of our students and campus community while preserving the freedom of expression. Among our stated core institutional values are the importance of free and expressive speech, civic engagement, and respect for individuals’ liberties.
While all campus community members have a Constitutionally protected right to express their views, it is important to recognize that right is not limitless. To ensure student safety and fulfillment of their educational mission, higher education campuses establish—consistent with the First Amendment—content-neutral time, place, and manner restrictions. These policies enable students and other community members to have their voices heard in a peaceful manner regarding any issue, regardless of subject or viewpoint, without disrupting activities on campus that impact the campus’s ability to provide educational events, instruction, and other services.
To provide an equitable educational experience where all students are safe and supported, and aware of their rights and responsibilities as a member of our campus community, we encourage you to explore the policies and resources on this web page.
Thank you for your engagement on this important topic, and for your support as we work together to foster an inclusive, safe campus climate for all who live, learn, and work here.
