Academic Planning and Assessment
One Goal, Many Approaches
Purchase College’s academic assessment program is fundamentally designed to assist faculty in monitoring and promoting student achievement and success.
The program is built around a shared focus on the two common requirements of a Purchase education, the Senior Project and the General Education curriculum. Yet it also honors the specificity of academic design and delivery by allowing programs to determine how their curricula supplement formative competencies with disciplinary expertise, and how student achievement in the senior capstone is best ascertained.
Collecting and tracking this information on an ongoing basis assists faculty in designing and refining major course offerings, course sequencing, and associated course and program-specific learning outcomes. Additionally, the process encourages dialogue between faculty teaching major requirements and those teaching general education courses, to ensure that foundational knowledge and competencies offered within general education prepare students for more advanced and specialized work within their academic fields.
