Online Writing Lab (OWL)
The OWL tutors are the same writing tutors that work in the Learning Center for one-on-one writing appointments during the fall and spring terms. They provide asynchronous feedback on written work to help students progress with their essay and improve their writing skills.
Submit to the OWL
The submission platform is hosted as a “course” in Brightspace. First, review the submission guidelines below. Then login with your Purchase credentials and Self Enroll. Next, upload your essay or research paper as a Word document (.doc, .docx) just as you would submit an assignment for a course. Be sure to submit well in advance of any due dates to allow enough time for your revision process.
Go to the Submission Space in Brightspace, Self-Enroll in Course, then Submit your Writing
What Happens Next?
Once your essay or research paper has been reviewed, you will receive an email notification to your Purchase account within two business days.
Submission Guidelines
- You can only include one essay or research paper per submission, but it may be at any stage of the writing process. Questions, paragraphs, rough drafts, and outlines are welcome.
- You can submit the same assignment up to three times.
- In order for our writing tutors to provide the best feedback possible, be sure to share the assignment guidelines for your draft as well as some notes about what you want help with.
- Tutors will provide written feedback on a maximum of 5 pages. If your essay is longer than 5 pages, please indicate the 5 pages on which you would like to receive feedback.
- Writing tutors will not proofread or correct your work for you. Rather, you will receive suggestions, guidance, and feedback.
- Allow at least 2 business days for feedback to arrive. Tutors do not work at night or on weekends. Submissions that are uploaded after 4:00pm are considered to be received on the next business day. Submissions that are uploaded during the weekend are considered to be received on Monday.
