How to Assign and Configure Accommodations in Brightspace
For exams and quizzes administered via Brightspace, faculty are responsible for logging in to Accommodate and reviewing their class roster(s) to determine who has extended time for exams/quizzes in order to adjust the administration time accordingly within Brightspace.
How to Add Extra Time to Brightspace Activities
Instructors have the ability to allow additional time on quizzes and other activities by using the “Accommodations” feature at the individual student level and the “Special Access” option at the individual activity level.
Add “Accommodations” to a Particular Student in Brightspace:
- from the course Navbar, click on Course Management>Roster
- click on the chevron next to the student whose quiz accommodations you want to add/view, and then click “View Accommodations”
- under the “Timing” heading, select “Modify Time Limit” and choose to either increase the original quiz time by a factor, or add extra time in minutes
- click the “Save” button to update that student’s accommodations
More about available Accommodations in Brightspace can be found at their official help documentation.
Special Access
You can modify the access to a Quiz or Assignment for particular students by using the Special Access setting, which you can find under the “Availability Dates & conditions” section at the Quiz or Assignment’s setup area. Faculty Guide – How to Submit Information for an Exam Proctored at The Testing Center
For in-person exams, when students submit a Testing Accommodation Appointment via Accommodate, The Testing Center will be notified of the request via email. A testing coordinator will then review the appointment to ensure that the specified accommodations are correct and to schedule the space for the designated duration of the exam during the testing hours (Monday – Friday 9:00am – 4:30pm).
Faculty will then be notified via email of the scheduled appointment. Faculty are expected to review the appointment right away and indicate if the exam date, time, and length are accurate. Special attention should be paid to any exam appointment scheduled to take place outside of the regular class period.
Next, faculty should complete the “Faculty Information Required” section to upload the exam, provide any additional instructions, and indicate the preferred exam return method. All exams must be submitted electronically through the Accommodate system within at least 48 hours of the test time.
Follow the steps to submit information in order for The Testing Center to proctor the exam.
Step 1: Log in to Accommodate using your Purchase College credentials to review the appointment. The Faculty Accommodate Login page can also be accessed via ‘Faculty And Staff Resources.’
Step 2: Once you have logged in, click the “Courses” tab on the side of the page.
Step 3: From the “Course Catalog” tab, click on the title/name of your course. You will then be taken to a page (and tab) titled “Course Details”.
Step 4: Click on the “Room Bookings” tab.
Step 5: Click on the student’s name to view their Room Booking request.
Step 6: Review the information the student submitted to confirm they scheduled the test for the correct date, time, and length.
Step 7: Scroll down and complete the section that says “Faculty Information Required” to upload the exam, provide any additional instructions, and indicate the preferred exam return method.
Step 8: Click the “Submit” button when finished. The Testing Center will be notified via e-mail that you have completed the Test Accommodation Appointment form.
