Alumni and Class Years
alumnus (singular masculine)
alumni (plural masculine; use for a collective body of men and women)
alumna (singular feminine)
alumnae (plural feminine; use when referring to women only)
alum/alums (only for informal use)
For alumni listings, the year (and degree, if included) may be listed with or without parentheses, but consistency should be maintained within the document:
- Undergraduate degree: Jane Doe ’91; John Doe, Class of ’91
- Graduate degree: Jane Doe MFA ’91
- More than one Purchase degree, earned in different years: Jane Doe ’91, MFA ’94; John Doe BA ’91, MusB ’93, MM ’95
- Purchase graduate with a degree from another institution: Jane Doe ’91, MD
- When referring to a former student who attended but did not earn a degree at Purchase College, use the dates of attendance: Jane Doe ’89–’91
- Capitalize class when referring to a specific class: John Doe, Class of ’91
