For the review committee, the essay and portfolio are a critical aspect of the initial screening process. Your best intellectual and creative effort should be demonstrated in both of these categories. Because of time constraints in reviewing a large number of portfolios, it is best to send only your strongest work.
Explain your prior experience making art and why you wish to come to Purchase College, be admitted to the Film Conservatory, and anything else you wish to highlight about yourself as an applicant and prospective filmmaker. Your essay might include a description of yourself, a discussion of why you want to make films, and include any experience you’ve had that supports or prompts your choice.
Artistic submissions may come from the following categories:
Film or Video: Max total runtime 20 minutes. In addition to your submitted samples, please submit a statement describing your SPECIFIC role in each production. For example: writer, director, actor, camera, etc.
Writing Samples: Max total 15 pages. This submission can include short stories, poetry, screenplays, fiction or nonfiction writing.
Visual Art, Music, or Artistic Creations: Photographs, sculpture, painting, music, etc. Candidates may include a few examples of work which demonstrates creative productivity in these areas.
While your application is under review, a Film faculty member may contact you to request supplemental portfolio materials (e.g. writing samples, videos, or creative work) or a brief follow-up interview to be conducted remotely.
