Native Voice Project

The Native Voice Project consists of 40 large vinyl yard signs with Wappinger Algonquian words and phrases, alongside their English translations.

First installed at Purchase as a registered project for the United Nations ‘International Year of Indigenous Languages’ in 2019, the goal of the Native Voice installation is to familiarize our campus community with the Native Algonquian language of Purchase, which has no fluent speakers left, and to raise awareness of local Native heritage. Each year during the month of November, students, faculty and staff are invited to install the signs along the grassy area adjacent to our campus landmark clock. Each year during the month of November the project is installed along the grassy area adjacent to our campus landmark clock, and is accompanied by related events. The project is co-sponsored by the Multicultural Center and School of liberal Studies.
