Internships
Internship programs allow students to unlock their potential by contributing to projects within a company.
The Rundown
Internships are divided into groups: broadcast, text/print, and general. However, if you’re stronger in one area than another, it often doesn’t matter to hiring managers for internships. If you can report and write, show up on time, and be professional, you have a shot. Also, your medium-specific strength is less important for you than your chance to work as a journalist at a professional news organization. Try everything. All experience is good experience, for your future job prospects and for your overall education.
Students need to have completed 30 credits to enroll in an internship. And, if you aren’t yet ready for an internship, join any number of campus organizations: The Purchase Phoenix, The Beat, WPSR, Submissions Magazine, Italics Mine, Gutter Mag, and others. The experience you get there will help you in applying to outside, “real world” internships later.
It’s never too early or too late to start.
