Academic Policies

Academic integrity
All students are bound by the Community Standards of Conduct at Purchase College, which include the college policy on academic integrity. Any form of academic dishonesty is considered extremely serious and may result in disciplinary action, including expulsion.

Satisfactory academic progress
Satisfactory academic progress is measured in terms of the credit-bearing coursework for which students are registered after the withdrawal deadline. The same standards also apply to nonmatriculated students who enroll for 6 or more credits per semester. Nonmatriculated students who have a GPA lower than 2.0 (C)—or who have not passed at least 50 percent of their coursework attempted for credit—may be barred from further registration at the college.

Course load

  • During the academic year (fall and spring semesters), students in the School of Liberal Studies & Continuing Education may take a maximum of 18 credits each semester without special permission.

  • During the online winter session, all students are limited to one 4-credit course because of the intensive nature of winter session. No exceptions will be considered.

  • During summer session, students may enroll for a maximum of 12 credits across the four summer sessions. Limits within the sessions are as follows: a maximum of 4 credits in the online Session I and a maximum of 8 credits in Sessions II, III, and IV combined. Please note: According to New York State policy, all students must pay for summer session courses on a per-credit basis. There are no special rates for 12 or more credits.

  • Overload: Students who want to take more than the maximum allowable credits must:

    1. download the Permission for Overload form (PDF) or obtain it from the School of Liberal Studies & Continuing Education; and

    2. return the completed form to the school with either proof of a minimum 3.5 GPA or written approval from the appropriate dean of their college.

Overload applicants should allow at least a week for processing and will be given an Overload Access Code (OAC) if their application is approved. To reduce the chance of closed courses, register for the maximum allowable credits before seeking overload approval.

Independent studies and tutorials
Students who are not enrolled in a degree program at Purchase College are not eligible for independent studies or tutorials.
