Undergraduate majors in the Conservatory of Music lead to the Bachelor of Music (Mus.B.) degree. For aspiring music professionals, four years at Purchase College offers something rare in the conservatory world: a true musical community where competition is balanced by a commitment to mentoring.

Core Curriculum Requirements

In addition to the professional studies curricula, all students entering the Bachelor of Music degree program at Purchase College who have not matriculated at any college before Fall 2000 must fulfill the Purchase College core curriculum requirements (formerly referred to as "general education"). At the present time, students pursuing the Bachelor of Music degree must complete courses in the following seven categories:

  1. Basic Communication: LWR 1110/College Writing (fall, freshman year)
  2. Western Civilization:
    • Through Spring 2009: FRS 1001/Culture & Society in the West II (spring, freshman year);
    • Fall 2009 and after: An approved course in Western civilization (spring, freshman year)
  3. American History: GEA 2000/American History, Society, and the Arts (fall, sophomore year)
  4. Natural Science: An approved course in natural science (consult with your advisor and refer to the PDF document below)
  5. Humanities: Survey of Music History II
  6. Social Science: An approved course in social science (consult with your advisor and refer to the PDF document below)
  7. Other World Civilizations: Survey of Music History I or World Music and Jazz Traditions
