The Humanities Theatre is the campus theatre for Purchase College. Hosting events for students from before they are accepted all the way through Senior Speaker auditions and Convocation rehearsals, the 340-seat theatre serves students in myriad ways throughout their collegiate career.
The Humanities Theatre focuses on academic and student life events: a home for classes, stage productions, film festivals and screenings, concerts, workshops, guest lectures, discussion panels, Presidential Town Halls, the Purchase Wide Open Festival, and more. Serving constituencies from all of the schools and conservatories on campus, it is known as the space to use for those events that are going to attract a big audience, or which require a real stage, sound and lights.
In use since the college’s inception, the theatre’s equipment was significantly updated in 2003, providing theatrical lighting and sound systems to support the range of events that come its way. As the home of the BA program in theatre and performance and that program’s senior project productions, the stage hosts upwards of 20 stage productions a year, including original plays by students in theatre and performance and in playwriting and screenwriting.
The theatre is the site of class meetings for courses in the School of Humanities, the Conservatory of Music, the Conservatory of Theatre Arts, and the School of Liberal Studies & Continuing Education, as well as first-year seminars, conferences, and hands-on internships in technical theatre and in arts marketing.
