IT JUST FELT LIKE HOME

Actually, I never thought I’d go to a State University of New York school. Then, at the end of my junior year of high school, we moved to Maine, and I really wanted to get back to a city—maybe Boston or somewhere— just not New York.

But, I don’t know; as soon as my mom and I set foot on the Purchase campus, it just felt like home. I can’t explain it; I knew right away that this was where I wanted to go.

Everybody always talks about all the bricks and large buildings here, but I don’t get it. The minute you step out of the mall, there are all these trees and wide-open places. I just love it.

ABOUT THE BAND

I play bass for the band Pipebomb Saints; we do a sort of punk/alternative rock and roll—all originals; we almost never put down a cover. We’re recording our second CD now, and we’re on a compilation CD called “New York Rockers against Drunk Driving.” I don’t know if that really counts as one of “our” recordings.

We haven’t had a chance to play at Purchase yet, but I’m really looking forward to that. One of the other band members is a student here, too.

Anyway, here I am in the middle of final exams, stressed out and all, and I’m busy booking our southern tour. At least it will be warm.

…AND THE VENUE

I’ve just decided to major in Media, Society, and the Arts. It seemed like the most interesting major for me. I want to run my own music store and venue, a club or something where groups can come and perform. So, I’m also thinking about adding an economics minor to get more of the business perspective. I just need to fill out the application.

Originally, I was considering a major in art, but I didn’t think my portfolio was strong enough to get me into the program. Besides, I really like the communication side of Media, Society, and the Arts. The public relations side of the arts is something that fascinates me.

HANGING OUT IN THE OUTBACK

What’s living on campus like? Well, it’s never really boring; there’s stuff going on here all the time. Sometimes things will be happening in your hall, or there’ll be a concert or student play or performance on campus. Sometimes we just hang out in the dorms.

I really enjoy the Neuberger Museum of Art, too. I’ve been there a few times, and it’s really cool to have something like that on campus.

I live in the Outback and my roommate is on the Purchase College Student Senate and has her own radio show. Now that I’m going to be on the College website, we have to laugh about how our room is starting to make the Outback “famous” again.

THE PLACE THAT’S RIGHT

My parents are kind of funny about my grades. I’m doing, well, okay with my grades, and all they keep saying is that they would have killed to have grades like these when they went to college.

I think that has a lot to do with the fact that I love this place—it’s been an excellent choice for me and for a lot of the people who go here. To someone thinking about college, I’d say just trust your feelings:  if Purchase College feels right to you, then it will really work out.
