Welcome to Purchase College
Purchase College, founded in 1967 as part of the State University of New York system, was the fulfillment of Governor Nelson Rockefeller's vision to create a learning community which combined professional conservatory programs in the performing and visual arts with rigorous studies in the liberal arts and sciences. This vision continues to be the guiding force in our quest to provide an exceptional educational experience.
Purchase boasts a student body of approximately 4,200 students representing 47 states and 67 countries, who either live on or commute to the 25-building, 500-acre campus in Westchester County, 35 minutes north of Manhattan. Our talented student dancers, musicians, actors, writers, and artists showcase their work not only in Westchester, but also in New York City, Los Angeles, and abroad. Purchase College is in the top tier among public baccalaureate institutions in the nation for the number of psychology and biology graduates who receive doctorates.
Purchase's reputation reflects its distinctive academic programs, its faculty, and its more than 17,500 alumni who play major roles in the arts, entertainment, education, science, and business. Among our distinguished faculty are Guggenheim, Fulbright, and national award-winning artists, journalists, and academics. Graduates include Oscar, Emmy, and Tony Award winners, prominent research scientists, journalists, and academics, as well as CEOs of international corporations. The National Science Foundation has recognized Purchase College's leadership in graduating students who attain doctorates in the sciences.
The college's four renowned arts programs function collaboratively as the School of the Arts. Humanities and science programs, both traditional (for example, premed) and interdisciplinary (for example, environmental studies) are administered within the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The college's newest unit, the School of Film and Media Studies, includes programs that encourage students to take courses across areas and schools. Each student's academic career culminates in a senior project that takes the form of a research project, scholarly thesis, exhibition, or performance. Whether a day, evening, part-time, or weekend student, the wide array of courses and access to faculty creates ample opportunities to meet individual needs and objectives.
Since its inception, Purchase College has served as an arts center for the public as well as its students. The Performing Arts Center—a four-theatre complex that is considered one of the finest of its kind on the East Coast—has a full performance calendar and provides a professional venue for student work. The Neuberger Museum of Art, the tenth largest university museum in the country, balances the display of its permanent collection with 10 temporary exhibitions each year.
Purchase College is dedicated to academic excellence in the arts and the liberal arts, to the enrichment and nurturing of its students and to providing access to cultural and recreational opportunities for its neighbors. We are grateful to our many alumni and community members who support the college through scholarships, professorships, and distinguished programs. We will continue to provide access to scholarship and creativity to meet the needs of all of our constituents.
Please enjoy your visit to Purchase College.
